Disability writing and experience

Hello!  If you've found this page, you're probably interested in my work and background in disability.  My own disability is wrapped up in multiple neurological conditions, including Aspergers and ADHD.  (Wonder what it's like?)  Disillusioned by how little mainstream literature related to my situation as an adult woman, I turned to articles and blogs by other people on the autism spectrum.  I discovered an unseen community of people like myself, and the social model of disability which completely changed the way I thought about myself and the challenges I face.

As well as sharing my own experiences, I've written a great deal about disability in my work with the ABC and AnglicareCQ.  I've covered disability issues including accessibility and the introduction of the NDIS, and shared the stories of other people with disability.

Here's a selection of my disability-related work:

Kicking goals for the NDIS

A partnership between a disability support service and a regional rugby league team is providing jobs for players and helping the service prepare for the NDIS. About half a dozen CQ Capras players are now support workers with the Endeavour Foundation.

Jodi's sharing her skills

Combining your work with your interests is a great way to bring purpose to your day.  Jodi from Biloela, who uses AnglicareCQ's disability service, is doing just that: she’s a keen crafter, and using her skills to serve her local community.

Pub crawl for accessibility

A few quiet beers after work on Friday shouldn't be a big deal - but for people with special access needs, a simple trip to the pub can be an obstacle course.  Meet the Accessible Pub Crawl crew, improving access to local venues one drink at a time.
