ABC stuff March 20: new local music

Hey, I've had a great idea.

Every week I drop into the ABC Capricornia studio to chat about local arts news and doings, and every week after the show people ring the station to find out more about whatever I was talking about because it isn't written down anywhere.

So, I'll start writing it down.

This week we talked about new music, because there's so much creativity and action coming out of our local music scene at the moment.

Sophie Rose

Young Rockhampton singer-songwriter Sophie Rose spent time in Woy Woy earlier this year working with Bill Chambers on some tracks for her first full-length album, Reawakened.  It doesn't have a release date yet, but keep your eye out for activity later this year.

You might remember some of Sophie's work from just a year or so ago:

As far as her brand new work goes, here's a tease of what might be to come recorded live at Allsorts earlier this year.  (Apologies for the quality, Facebook Live is what it is.)

Bec Ellen

Bec Ellen has made great strides in her musical craft in the last year or so, and is now working on her self-titled debut EP, due for release in July.  She's already faced down some big health-related challenges in her young life, and is pouring her energy and passion into her music.

You can catch Bec Ellen live at the Keppel Sands Krabtastic on Friday, March 31.

Daniel Miller

Rocky prog-rocker Daniel Miller has a fresh four-track EP Sweetheart available on BandCamp.  This particular track, Darkness Falls, has some very fine guitar work and is quite gentle, coming from a man who can rock a room loud and hard.

Daniel Miller is performing this Saturday at Stand United, a free all-ages show in Blackwater dedicated to raising mental health awareness.

Alice Hayes

Alice Hayes - one half of experimental low-fi duo Mason & Hayes - is working on ethereal, atmospheric new solo material full of spooky sounds and deeply personal storytelling.

Hayley Marsten

Gladstone country singer Hayley Marsten's latest single from her second EP Lonestar manages to sound at once brand new and old school and familiar, and is a good shout-along-to song when he done you wrong.  Also, a little bird tells my Hayley will be coming to Rocky soon, so stay tuned for news of that show.

Hayley Marsten's new single lifted from the new EP 'Lonestar', Second Fiddle. Directed by: Brock Daubert, The Filmery Recorded and produced by: Matt Fell Written by: Hayley Marsten & Allan Caswell H&MU: Lee Hanly "Sweetheart, I ain't playing second fiddle." It's the opening declaration on Hayley Marsten's brassy second release, and a statement you'd be a fool to doubt.

Know something I don't?  Leave a comment or contact me.  Thanks!
